Oral Surgery Consultation
Your initial appointment will consist of a consultation explaining your diagnosis and treatment options. Occasionally, surgery can be performed the same day as the consultation. However, a complex medical history or treatment plan will require an evaluation and a second appointment to provide treatment on another day.
Please assist us by providing the following information at the time of your consultation:
- Your surgical referral slip and any x-rays if applicable
- A list of medications you are presently taking.
- If you have medical or dental insurance, bring the necessary completed forms. This will save time and allow us to help you process any claims.
IMPORTANT: All patients under the age of 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at the consultation visit.
A pre-operative consultation and exam may be required for patients undergoing IV anesthesia for surgery. Please have nothing to eat or drink EIGHT HOURS prior to your surgery. You will also need an adult (18 years or older) to drive you home.
Please alert the office if you have a medical condition that may be of concern prior to surgery (i.e., diabetes, high blood pressure, artificial heart valves and joints, rheumatic fever, etc.) or if you are currently taking any medications.

Using Anticoagulants (Blood Thinners)
Many patients may be prescribed an anticoagulant medication such as Aspirin. Plavix (Clopidogrel), or Coumadin (Warfarin) after a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), stroke, Myocardial Infarction (heart attack) or Cardiac Stent Replacement. The purpose of these medications is to prevent unwanted blood clotting that may lead to serious medical conditions. Unfortunately, these medications may also lead to bleeding after your surgery procedure. As a result, if you are taking Coumadin (Warfarin), you will be asked to have a simple blood draw with your physician’s office to check your INR (International Normalized Ratio) to help determine your level of Anticoagulation (how much you bleed) a day or two prior to your procedure to facilitate your care. Depending on your results, your surgeon will typically perform your procedure and take additional measures to prevent hemorrhage that will allow you to continue your medications throughout the operative and post-operative periods. Every situation and patient condition is different, so please discuss your circumstances with your treating surgeon.
X-Rays
If your dentist has taken x-rays, you may request that they forward them to our office. If there is not enough time, please try and pick them up and bring them with you on the day of your surgery. If additional films are necessary, they can be taken at our office.
